Driving ESG Excellence: CIHTMB Technical Visit to K2 Bitumen’s CRMB Plant Highlights Sustainable Road Innovation
On 5th May 2025, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation Malaysian Branch (CIHTMB) organised a technical visit to K2 Bitumen Sdn Bhd’s state-of-the-art facility in Kg Kepayang, Ipoh, Perak.
Themed “Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB): Its Performance & Impact on Carbon Emission During Construction”, the session brought together Malaysia’s top highway and infrastructure professionals to explore sustainable road technologies aligned with ESG objectives.
The session was chaired by Datuk Ir. Zakaria Ahmad Zabidi, accompanied by fellow CIHTMB committee member Dato’ Ir. Wong Wai, and featured a technical briefing by En. Samsul Amir Jaharudin of K2 Bitumen. Attendees gained in-depth insights into K2B’s CRMB production technology, its environmental benefits, and impact on road performance.
What is CRMB and Why It Matters?
Crumb Rubber Modified Bitumen (CRMB) is an innovative binder produced using recycled rubber tyres, offering significant benefits in both performance and environmental sustainability. K2 Bitumen’s CRMB not only enhances road durability but also directly contributes to carbon emission reduction during construction, thanks to extended pavement life and reduced maintenance cycles.
This visit marks another important step in promoting green infrastructure, fully aligned with Malaysia’s Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) and government road quality policies. As Malaysia shifts towards ESG-driven infrastructure development, CRMB and CRMA (Crumb Rubber Modified Asphalt) are increasingly seen as vital components of the future.
Key Topics Discussed
Introduction to K2 Bitumen’s CRMB production facilities and laboratory
Integration of CRMB with government policies on road quality and green procurement
Future-oriented strategies for sustainable roads and ESG compliance
Real-world application benefits and carbon tracking
The technical talk was followed by a Q&A session, where participants exchanged ideas on scaling the use of CRMB nationwide, and concluded with a guided tour of K2B’s CRMB laboratory and manufacturing plant.
